Scott Ray, White Hall alderman, school board director and a member of the municipal Advertising and Promotion Commission, is making a career change.
Ray, longtime operator of Sandy Acres Grocery and Market, a convenience store at 9225 Sheridan Road on White Hall’s west side, said he sold the business to Nadeen “Nick” Siddique, owner of a number of convenience stores, including the White Hall Food Mart, 8003 Sheridan Road.
Siddique has leased the Sandy Acres property to Karim “Kevin” Lakhani, who decided to keep the Sandy Acres name, Ray said.
Ray said he made the decision to sell the business , which has been in his family off and on for more than 30 years, because of the long hours involved in running Sandy Acres.
“It’s a seven-day a week business, 12 to 14 hours a day,” he added. “I’ve got two great kids at my home and my sweetheart that I don’t get to spend much time with and they deserve better.”
Ray said he has been expanding the catering business at Sandy Acres over the years and plans to go into catering full time, adding he has an agreement to run the catering operation out of the convenience store until he can establish a modern kitchen in a nearby building.
“This will free up some time I can spend with my family,” he observed. “Siddique approached me one day with an offer I could not refuse.”
He declined to stipulate the sales price.
Ray said the sale will also free up more time for volunteering.
“I’d like to thank my loyal customers in the car business and grocery,” he added. “I’ve stressed service to customers and that is what I want to do in the catering business and volunteering.
“I’ve worked so much in the last four-years that I didn’t have time to think about the future.”
