Hairspray set to open

HAIRSPRAY Opens on July 25th at The Arts & Science Center

The musical Hairspray delighted audiences by sweeping them away to 1960’s Baltimore, where the 50’s are out and change is in the air! Loveable, plus-size heroine Tracy Trunblad has a passion for dancing and wins a spot on the local TV dance program, “The Corny Collins Show.” Overnight, she finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity. Can a larger than life adolescent manage to vanquish the program’s reigning princess, integrate the television show, and find true love while singing and dancing and do it all without mussing her hair?

This delightful musical is based on the original film by John Walters which was later made into a film musical starring John Travolta as Edna Turnblad. The original movie by John Walters, as well as the Broadway musical, is based on The Buddy Deane Show—yes, Pine Bluff’s own Buddy Deane, radio legend and icon. Deane’s dance show, which featured high school students, aired for seven years, six days a week for 2 1/2 hours a day in Baltimore. The film’s creator John Walters grew up in Baltimore and was fascinated by the show.
