CONWAY — The Central Arkansas baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead as the Bears defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 6-3 Tuesday night.
With one out in the fifth, Jonathan Davis and Michael Marietta both reached after being hit by a pitch. A fielding error allowed Scott Zimmerle to reach and load the bases for UCA.
After a strikeout, Garrett Brown singled through the left side to plate two runs for the Bears.
UCA used 10 pitchers in the game against UAPB. Connor Gilmore was credited with the win after allowing one run (unearned) on two hits.
For UAPB, Stanten Jones (0-3) was credited with the loss after allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits in four innings of work. He also allowed three walks with three strikeouts.
UCA scored again in the sixth on a RBI single by Marietta and again in the eighth on a RBI single by Davis. Davis also had a RBI single in the first inning.
UAPB scored a run in the third and two in the seventh.
In the seventh, Patrick Phillips hit a RBI groundout back to the pitcher and Rafael Soto scored on a passed ball.
For the Golden Lions, Phillips finished the night 2 of 4 with a RBI. Dylan Calhoun was 1 for 3 with a walk and Soto was 1 for 2 with two runs scored and two walks.
UAPB had just six hits in the game and struck out five times.
Davis led UCA with two hits and two RBIs, a run scored and a walk. UAPB is scheduled for a three game series with Southeastern Louisiana University beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. at the Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field in Hammond, La. The Golden Lions will return home on Monday to face UCA beginning at 3 p.m.
