UAPB wins with walk-off in extras

Arkansas-Pine Bluff scored in the bottom of the 13th inning to defeat North Dakota State 5-4 Sunday and clinch the weekend series.

NDSU (1-2) pitcher Mark Hermes put UAPB’s (2-1) Dwayne Hysmith and Dylan Calhoun on base in the 13th with a hit-by-pitch and walk. After reliever Adam Poehlmann came on, UAPB’s Isias Alcantar reached on a fielder’s choice and Hysmith advanced to third.

Hysmith scored on a throwing error from NDSU first baseman Wes Satzinger for the win.

The Bison got three scoreless innings from Kyle Kingsley who allowed just three hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Adam Lambrecht went two innings and allowed two hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

UAPB’s Redmond Floyd earned the victory after pitching three hitless innings and allowing just one walk with four strikeouts. Starter Jim Ploeger went seven innings, allowing two runs (two earned) on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

UAPB took a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning. Alcantar singled to lead off the inning. After a strikeout by catcher Mike Wieland, Warren Stehn singled to put runners on first and second.

Jacob Whitney was hit by pitch to load the bases. Cody DeMera grounded out to the pitcher but Alcantar was able to score on the play.

Pinch-hitter Kirby Campbell hit a RBI single to plate Stehn and give the Golden Lions the two-run lead.

NDSU tied it in the eighth inning on a two-run double by John Skrbec.

Calhoun finished the game 3 for 6 with a walk. Alcantar had three hits and a run scored. DeMera was 3 for 5 with a run and a RBI.

Campbell was 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs and two walks. Stehn had two hits with a run scored.

NDSU starter Trevor Jaunich went 4 2/3 innings allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

UAPB struck out 13 times on Sunday.

UAPB will travel to Norman, Okla., to face Oklahoma on Tuesday and Wednesday. Both games begin at 3 p.m.
