GARLAND, Texas — The Arkansas-Pine Bluff women’s basketball team had four players score double figures, including a double-double from Asia Rhines-Malone, as the No. 7 seed Lady Lions upset No. 2 seed Souther University 63-58 to advance to the semifinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament at the Curtis Culwell Center.
Rhines-Malone scored 13 points on 6 of 12 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Lions(13-17) on Wednesday afternoon. Senior Chi Chi Okwumabua scored 12 points on 3 of 12 shooting and was 6 of 9 from the free throw line. Okwuambua also grabbed six rebounds.
Jenise Gentry scored 10 points on 3 of 5 shooting and 4 of 9 from the free throw line. Christina Lasane scored 10 points on 4 of 4 shooting from the floor and 1 of 1 from the three-point range.
UAPB took a 20-18 lead on a lay-up by Rhines-Malone with 7:01 left in the first half and never relinquished from that point on. By halftime, the Lady Lions led Southern 31-21.
UAPB shot 40 percent (22 of 55) from the floor and was 2 of 6 from the three point range. They made 17 of 32 (53 percent) from the free throw line. Southern (13-17) was 40 percent (23 of 57) from the floor and 3 of 10 from the three point range. Southern made 9 of 15 from the free throw line.
Lakendra Marsh had nine points with five rebounds. Jazmyne Victorian contributed with seven points on 3 of 7 shooting and four rebounds.
UAPB out-rebounded Southern 51-31 in the game. The Lady Lions led as much as 13 points with 6:39 left in the second half.
Gentry made 1 of 2 from the free throw line to give UAPB a 53-40 lead. Southern scored nine straight points to cut the deficit to 54-49 with 3:16 left in the game.
Back-to-back lay-ups by Gentry gave the Lady Lions a 59-53 lead with 1:37 left in the game.
For Southern, Jasmine Jefferson scored 16 points on 7 of 11 shooting to lead all scorers. Kendra Coleman scored 12 points on 4 of 8 shooting and 4 of 8 from the free throw line. Yasmin Fuller contributed with nine points on 3 of 10 shooting.
UAPB will play the winner of Mississippi Valley State/Alabama A&M on Friday at noon.
