Arkansas-Pine Bluff did not get the upset from Alcorn State it needed to earn a share of the SWAC men’s basketball championship.
Texas Southern clinched the conference regular-season title Saturday with a 78-59 win over Alcorn State, finishing one game ahead of UAPB and Southern. Texas Southern finished its first season under coach Mike Davis 17-14 overall and 16-2, while UAPB (16-14 overall) and Southern (21-9) tied for second at 15-3.
But Texas Southern won’t get to have a No. 1 seed in the March 12-16 SWAC tournament in Garland, Texas, because it is suspended from the postseason for a number of NCAA violations. UAPB and Mississippi Valley State are also banned for low Academic Progress Rates, but UAPB is attempting to have its ban overturned in time for the conference tournament.
For now, Southern will have the top seed in the tourney.
