UAPB releases men’s basketball schedule

Two Southeastern Conference opponents and two NCAA tournament teams from last season dot Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s nonconference slate for men’s basketball.

The 2013-14 schedule was released Tuesday.

As usual, no home games have been scheduled for nonconference play. UAPB, which finished 16-14 overall and 15-3 in the SWAC last season, will start the campaign in the HBCU Tip-Off Classic, Nov. 8-11 at Philips Arena in Atlanta. A schedule for that tournament has not been released, but teams include Texas Southern, Norfolk State, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Virginia Union, Johnson C. Smith (N.C.), Tuskegee (Ala.) and Atlanta-based Morehouse.

UAPB’s schedule includes some familiar foes, including Oklahoma State (Nov. 15 in Stillwater, Okla.), Air Force (Nov. 17 near Colorado Springs, Colo.), SMU (Nov. 24 in Dallas) and Auburn (Dec. 30 in Auburn, Ala.). Each of these teams played UAPB during the 2011-12 season, while this season will mark the third straight UAPB and Air Force have met.

SMU is coached by Larry Brown, who won a national championship with Kansas in 1988 and won an NBA title with the Detroit Pistons in 2004. That game will tip off the Golden Lions’ stay in the Corpus Christi (Texas) Challenge, and will be followed by a game against Texas A&M of the SEC on Nov. 26 in College Station.

Oregon State (Dec. 7 in Corvallis, Ore.), Creighton (Dec. 17 in Omaha, Neb.) and Iowa (Dec. 22 in Iowa City) also highlight UAPB’s schedule. Creighton, which begins play in the new Big East Conference this season, is led by senior forward Doug McDermott, a first-team Associated Press All-American.

Creighton and Oklahoma State made the NCAA tournament last season, with Creighton advancing the farthest (third-round loss to Duke).

The Lions will begin conference play Jan. 4 at Mississippi Valley State and play its first home game Jan. 18 against defending SWAC champion Southern.

The SWAC tournament will be held at the Toyota Center in Houston, March 11-15. UAPB is banned from postseason play for the second straight year due to a low Academic Progress Rate, but is seeking to have the ban overturned.

A women’s basketball schedule for UAPB has not yet been released.
