FORT WORTH, Texas – The Arkansas-Pine Bluff baseball team scored two runs in the top of the 7th and one in the 8th to secure a 6-4 win over Texas Christian University Tuesday night at Lupton Stadium.
In the top of the 7th, Warren Stehn reached first after being hit by a pitch. He advanced to second a wild pitch. Patrick Phillips reached on an infield single that moved Stehn to third.
With two outs, Kirby Campbell was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and third for the Golden Lions. Stehn scored on a passed ball to tie the game and Isias Alcantar doubled to right field to plate Campbell.
In the 8th inning, Rafael Soto walked and advanced to second on a passed ball. Cody DeMara reached on a throwing error, which scored Soto.
For UAPB (4-9, 1-2 SWAC), Jaron Gold earned the victory. He pitched four innings, allowing just three hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Starter Stanten Jones went five innings, allowing four runs (all earned) on two hits with five walks and five strikeouts.
For TCU (3-8), Justin Scharf was credited with the loss. He pitched just 2/3 of an inning, allowing one run (earned) on one hit. TCU used six pitchers in the game.
Starter Stefan Crichton pitched just two innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with one walk and one strikeout.
UAPB scored three runs in the second inning to give the Golden Lions a 3-0 lead.
With one out in the second, Dwayne Hysmith singled to left field. Soto singled to shortstop and Hysmith advanced to second.
DeMara singled to load the bases. Stehn singled to left field to plate Hysmith but Soto was thrown out at home.
Phillips singled to load the bases again and Dylan Calhoun singled to center field to score another run. With two outs, Campbell reached on an error and Stehn scored.
DeMara finished the game 2 of 3 with a run scored. Phillips was 2 of 5 and Stehn was 1 of 3 with two runs scored and a RBI.
After scoring two runs in the bottom of the third, TCU took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth after scoring two more runs.
Dylan Fitzgerald was 2 of 3 with a run and a walk while Cody Jones was 1 of 4 with two runs scored. He also had a walk.
UAPB will now play SWAC opponent Grambling State in a three-game series beginning with a double-header on Saturday at noon.
