LORMAN, Miss. — After giving up three runs in the first two innings, the Arkansas-Pine Bluff baseball team woke up at the plate — scoring three runs in the third and four in the fifth — before defeating Alcorn State 10-3 Wednesday afternoon.
Jaron Gold is credited with the win after allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits in 2 2/3 innings. He also walked two and struck out two.
UAPB (7-17) was led at the plate by Isias Alcantar who finished 3 for 5 with a run and two RBIs. Kirby Campbell was 1 for 3 with a run and two RBIs.
Dylan Calhoun was 1 for 4 with two RBIs and Patrick Phillips was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
UAPB tallied 11 hits in the game. The Golden Lions also scored a run in the sixth and two in the ninth.
Alcorn State’s Zach Muenster is credited with the loss after allowing six runs (all earned) on six hits in four innings of work. He also struck out six and walked two.
Alcorn State (5-23) was led at the plate by Christian Hickman who finished the day 2 of 4 with a run scored. Angel Polo was 1 for 3 with a RBI and Josh Powell was 1 for 4 with a run and a RBI.
Alcorn State scored two runs in the first and one in the second and combined for five hits and left five runners on base. UAPB stranded 13 runners.
UAPB’s Humberto Zavala pitched 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief, allowing just one hit. Alcorn State’s Terrence Stubbs gave up two runs (both earned) on one hit with three walks and a strikeout in one inning of work.
UAPB will host Prairie View A&M this weekend beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.
