UAPB edges Jackson, drops one to SU


MONROE, La. — Arkansas-Pine Bluff completed a game and made up another Monday at the ULM Softball Complex.

UAPB finished a 2-1 victory over Jackson State that started on March 23 in the SWAC Round-Up crossover event. Then Southern scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat UAPB 8-6 in a make-up of a March 30 rainout.

Against Jackson State, Lacie Sutterfield (11-10) allowed one earned run on seven hits and struck out two in a complete-game victory.

UAPB (11-25, 9-5 SWAC), which was outhit 7-5, scored in the second inning when Alexsis McCain crossed the plate on a passed ball. Its other run came on a Jasmine Hardwrick triple.

Tiressa Jacobs was 2 for 3 for the Lady Lions.

In the next game, Southern (6-36, 3-8 SWAC) scored four runs in the second, one run in the third, one in the fifth and two in the seventh. UAPB scored a run in the first, two in the second, one in the fifth and two in the seventh inning.

UAPB’s Heather Leigh is credited with the loss after allowing eight runs (three earned) on 12 hits with three walks and two strikeouts in eight innings of work.

For the Lady Lions, Leigh was also 2 for 5 with a run scored. Delya Jackson was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Jacobs was 1 for 4 with two RBIs. Jackson’s two-run double in the seventh inning tied the game.

Hardwrick was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI. McCain was 2 for 5 with a run scored. Kelsey Ridgeway was 1 for 4 with a run.

UAPB is scheduled to play at Prairie View A&M on Friday, beginning at 3 p.m.

Texas Southern 5, UAPB 0 (Sun.)

In Pine Bluff, UAPB managed just two hits as Texas Southern won 5-0 Sunday to sweep the weekend SWAC series.

The Lady Tigers (27-12, 10-1 SWAC) scored a run in the second, a run in the third and three in the fifth inning. Heather Leigh pitched a complete game for the Lady Lions (10-24, 7-4 SWAC) as she allowed five runs (all earned) on nine hits with six walks and two strikeouts.

Kelsey Ridgeway finished the game 1 for 1 with two walks and Tiressa Jacobs was 1 for 2 for the Lady Lions.
