HOUSTON — Arkansas-Pine Bluff shelled out 15 hits and left 15 runners on base Sunday as Texas Southern took a 6-3 victory to clinch a three-game SWAC baseball series.
UAPB (6-17, 3-5 SWAC) had four more hits than Texas Southern (12-13, 4-5), but couldn’t quite match the Tigers on the scoreboard through three innings. The Tigers scored two runs each in the first and second innings and added a run each in the third and sixth, while the Golden Lions had a run each in the first three innings.
Kirby Campbell went 3 for 3 and Isias Alcantar was 3 for 5 to lead UAPB offensively. Also, Jacob Whitney and Mike Ludwig both were 2 for 4 and Dylan Calhoun was 2 for 5. Campbell and Whitney each had a double.
Four Texas Southern players each had two hits, including Watson Chapel graduate Sebastian Stargell, who batted in two runs.
Stanten Jones (0-4) gave up five runs (three earned) on eight hits and struck out three in four innings for the Lions. Andrew Buehler pitched the next 1 1/3 and allowed two hits, and Redmond Floyd held the Tigers to one hit in the final 2 2/3.
The Lions roughed up Frank Cruz IV for 13 hits in 6 1/3 innings, but Cruz got the win to improve to 2-2. He struck out three.
UAPB will play at Alcorn State on Wednesday before hosting Prairie View in a three-game series this weekend.
