FORT WORTH, Texas — This was not Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s week.
A day after blowing a 6-0 lead in an 11-8 loss to Alcorn State, UAPB could not rebound against Texas Southern, losing a 3-0 lead and falling 6-5 Thursday in a loser’s bracket game of the SWAC tournament at LaGrave Field. The loss ends the Golden Lions’ season at 21-31.
Texas Southern (22-31) scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 5-3 lead and broke a 5-all tie with a run in the seventh. Watson Chapel graduate Sebastian Stargell went 3 for 3 with the go-ahead RBI and a run scored to lead the Tigers.
Marcos Lara (4-2) threw a complete-game victory, striking out six and allowing four earned runs on seven hits with four walks.
Kyle Schwartz, the reigning SWAC Pitcher of the Week for the Golden Lions, struggled through the first 3 1/3 innings, giving up four earned runs on nine hits and striking out none. Redmond Floyd (1-2) only allowed an unearned run on two hits the rest of the way, but that run would earn him the loss.
UAPB’s first run game in the first inning when Mike Wieland singled and advanced to second on a fielding error. It was 3-0 after an error on Patrick Phillips’ at-bat and Dylan Calhoun’s sacrifice grounder drew in runs.
Then Texas Southern took the lead away. Stargell, who singled in the inning, scored on an error at shorstop to put the Tigers on the board. One-run doubles by Corbin Smith and Chris Deleon, along with a two-RBI single by Jerry Ford, gave the Tigers a two-run lead.
UAPB tied it in the fifth on a two-run home run by Isias Alcantar, but neither team scored until Stargell’s RBI single in the seventh.
De Mera and Kirby Campbell each had two hits for UAPB, which had seven hits to Texas Southern’s 11.
