Thurmond placed on Buchanan Award watch list

PHILADELPHIA — UAPB senior defensive end Brandon Thurmond was named along with 19 other players to the watch list for the Buck Buchanan Award, which honors the outstanding defensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision, The Sports Network announced Wednesday.

Thurmond has the most sacks in the FCS this season with 15.5. He also has 56 tackles, which is more than double his total from last year, and seven quarterback hurries to go with three forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick.

With his help, UAPB also ranks first in the SWAC in scoring defense at 16 points per game and second in total defense at 290 yards allowed per game.

The Buchanan award is voted on by a national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries. The award will be presented Dec. 17 at the FCS Awards Banquet and Presentation in Philadelphia.
