UAPB defensive end Brandon Thurmond was placed on The Sports Network FCS All-America second team, released Monday.
Thurmond finished the season with 17.5 sacks, which leads the nation in all divisions and has tied a school record. He had one sack in Saturday’s SWAC championship victory against Jackson State.
Two Central Arkansas players who came from Southeast Arkansas high schools were named All-America third-teamers.
Dollarway alumnus Jesse Grandy and Stuttgart graduate Seth Allison were honored as a punt returner and linebacker, respectively, after helping lead the Bears to their second straight NCAA FCS playoff appearance and a share of the Southland Conference title. Grandy, a senior who transferred to UCA from Ole Miss before his junior season, led the Southland Conference in punt returns and ranked seventh in the nation with 12.5-yard average. He also was UCA’s top receiver with 61 receptions for 797 yards and seven touchdowns.
Allison, a graduate, was UCA’s third-leading tackler on the season with 84 stops, forced three fumbles and recovered two. He finished his career with eight interceptions.
Another UCA player, senior offensive lineman Corey Howard, was a second-team selection.
