Texas Southern avoids series sweep


Texas Southern junior Marcos Lara pitched a complete game as the Tigers avoided the series sweep and defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 4-2 on Sunday at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.

Lara allowed just two runs (both earned) on seven hits in nine innings of work. He also struck out six and walked four.

TSU (18-22, 10-11 SWAC) scored a run in the first, two in the fourth and one in the ninth. UAPB (17-26, 10-8 SWAC) scored a run in the first and one in the fourth.

Dylan Calhoun hit into a RBI groundout in the fourth, which plated Warren Stehn from third.

UAPB’s Kyle Schwartz pitched 8 2/3 innings, allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Golden Lions left seven runners on base.

Stehn led UAPB, finishing the day 2 for 4 with a run. Kirby Campbell was 1 for 3 with an RBI and Calhoun was 0 for 3 with an RBI.

TSU’s Demario Thibodeaux finished 2 for 4 with a run and one RBI. Jerry Ford was 2 for 4 with a run scored.

UAPB is still in second place in the Western Division behind Southern (19-18, 14-10 SWAC).

UAPB is scheduled to face Murray State at 6 p.m. today at Taylor Field and again at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.
