SWAC finals moved to Houston

NEW ORLEANS — The Southwestern Athletic Conference has a new home for its football and basketball championships.

Houston will serve as the host city for 2013-15 football championship games and the 2014-16 basketball tournaments. The football championship will be held at Reliant Stadium, which is home to the Houston Texans, and the basketball tournament will be housed at the Toyota Center, home to the Houston Rockets.

The SWAC’s Council of Presidents and Chancellors voted unanimously to relocate the events, according to a news release.

The move ends the football championship’s relationship with Birmingham, Ala., where Legion Field hosted the game since its inception in 1999. Arkansas-Pine Bluff won the most recent SWAC title game in Birmingham, defeating Jackson State 24-21 in overtime on Dec. 8.

The basketball tournament had been held at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, Texas, near Dallas, the past three seasons.

The 2013 SWAC football championship will be held Dec. 7, and the basketball tournament is set for March 11-15, 2014.
