Arkansas-Pine Bluff scored seven runs total in the seventh and eighth innings but could not complete a monstrous comeback as Southern won the first game of a baseball doubleheader 11-8 Saturday at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.
Southern then swept the twin bill with a 2-0 win.
The Jaguars roughed up UAPB starter Kyle Schwartz with four runs in the first inning. Schwartz lasted six innings, however, giving up eight earned runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out five.
Patrick Phillips and Isias Alcantar each had three hits and Dylan Calhoun lined two for UAPB. Alcantar had a triple and knocked in three runs.
Southern led 9-1 after a five-run seventh.
Details on the second game were unavailable.
The final game of the series is at 1 p.m. today.
