HAMMOND, La. — The Southeastern Louisiana baseball team broke out the bats early and often Sunday as it pounded Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 17-1, to complete the series sweep at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Southeastern (14-6) scored 10 runs combined in the second and third innings, taking an 11-0 lead before UAPB (5-14) advanced a runner past first base.
The Lions scored one in the first, four in the second and six in the third to take a commanding lead.
In his first collegiate start, Southeastern sophomore Tanner Rainey went 3 for 5 at the plate with a single, double and a two-run home run.
Ben Hernandez, Sam Roberson and freshman Kyle Cedotal each had a pair of hits for the Lions.
UAPB’s Jim Ploeger was credited with the loss after giving up 10 runs (six earned) on six hits with three walks in 2 1/3 innings.
Humberto Zavala pitched two innings and allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits with two walks. Grant Glass pitched two innings and allowed three runs (all earned) on three hits with a strikeout.
Southeastern’s Jordan Hymel was credited with the win after pitching five scoreless innings and allowing just four hits with four strikeouts and a walk.
UAPB’s only run of the game came in the top of the ninth inning.
With one out, Mike Ludwig led hit a single to left field. He advanced to second after Eric Alcantara was hit-by-a-pitch. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third.
Mike Wieland hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate Ludwig from third. Rafael Soto, Patrick Phillips, Isias Alcantar, Dylan Calhoun, Kirby Campbell and Tyler Oertie all had hits for the Golden Lions.
The win completes a three-game sweep for Southeastern after defeating UAPB 14-1 on Friday and 4-3 on Saturday.
UAPB will host Central Arkansas today at Taylor Field beginning at 6 p.m. UCA defeated UAPB 6-3 on March 12 in Conway.
