BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Arkansas-Pine Bluff baseball was swept Sunday after Samford University defeated the Golden Lions 17-9.
UAPB used nine pitchers in the game as Samford tallied 14 hits.
Andrew Buehler is tagged with the loss after pitching a 1/3 of an inning and allowing five runs (all earned) on three hits and two walks.
Samford’s Charles Terry (1-0) earned the win after pitching three innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
UAPB (14-25) starter Mickey Ramirez didn’t make it out of the first inning after he gave up five runs (all earned) on four hits with a walk after facing just five batters.
Jaron Gold pitched 3 1/3 and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits with a walk and a strikeout. Jim Ploeger pitched 1 2/3 and allowed two runs (both earned) on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Redmond Floyd pitched 1 1/3 and allowed two runs (both earned) on two hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Grant Glass, Stanten Jones, Humberto Zavala and Mike Ludwig pitched a combined 1 1/3 and allowed one run (unearned) on one hit with one walk.
Samford (22-19) scored five runs in the first inning, six runs in the sixth inning and two in the seventh inning. They also scored one run in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings.
UAPB scored four runs in the second inning to tie the game at 5. The Golden Lions also scored two runs in the fifth, two runs in the sixth and one in the first.
UAPB’s Isias Alcantar had three hits in the game. He also scored twice and had one RBI. Mike Wieland was 2 for 5 with four RBIs.
Dylan Calhoun was 1 for 3 with a run and two RBIs.
Patrick Phillips and Tyler Oertle also had an RBI each.
For Samford, C.K. Irby led the team with three hits and three RBIs. He also scored twice. Phillip Ervin was 3 for 5 with two runs and three RBIs.
UAPB will host Alcorn State University today at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex beginning at 3 p.m.
