Arkansas-Pine Bluff linebacker Bill Ross won his third SWAC Defensive Player of the Week award of the season and second in a row, the conference announced Monday.
The senior from Wetumpka, Ala., recorded eight tackles Saturday to bring his season total to 105. It’s the second straight year Ross has made more than 100 tackles and the third straight that a UAPB player has done so.
Ross also had a sack, a fumble recovery and an interception in a 24-17 victory at Grambling State.
In polls, UAPB (8-2) remains third in the Sheridan Broadcasting Network black college poll, which determines the black college national champion. In fact, the top five teams did not change positions, as Winston-Salem State (11-0) remained first, Bethune-Cookman (8-2) second, Tennessee State (8-2) fourth and Alabama State (7-3) fifth.
Sixth- through 10th-place teams are Tuskegee (9-1), Jackson State (6-4), Alabama A&M (7-3), Miles (8-2) and North Carolina Central (6-4).
UAPB remains No. 2 in the Boxtorow FCS HBCU Football Coaches’ Poll, receiving no first-place votes but ranked only behind Bethune-Cookman ,which had 14. UAPB also remains third in the Boxtorow HBCU Media Top 10 poll, behind No. 1 Winston-Salem State (11-0) and Bethune-Cookman.
The Boxtorow polls are conducted by the national radio show “From the Press Box to Press Row.”
