UAPB defensive lineman Brandon Thurmond and linebacker Bill Ross were named College Football Performance Awards Defensive Players of the Week for the SWAC following Saturday’s 50-21 victory over Southern.
Thurmond made two sacks — later counted as one solo and two assisted — raising his total to 9.5 on the season. He leads Montana’s Zack Wagenmann by a half-sack for the most in the Football Championship Subdivision.
Ross, who is also the SWAC Defensive Player of the Week, had nine tackles and a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown.
The College Football Performance Awards is the largest awards organization in Division I football.
UAPB sixth in SBN; third in coaches poll
UAPB remained sixth in the Sheridan Broadcasting Network black college poll despite its dominating victory over Southern.
The poll, which determines the black college national champion, has a new No. 1, however. Winston-Salem State (8-0) took over the spot from now-No. 2 Tennessee State (7-1). Bethune-Cookman (5-2), Alabama A&M (6-1) and North Carolina Central (5-2) round out the top five.
Seventh- through 10th-place teams are Miles (7-1), Howard (5-2), Alabama State (4-3) and Tuskegee (6-1).
UAPB is third in the Boxtorow HBCU Coaches Poll, fifth in the Boxtorow HBCU Media Poll and fifth in the Heritage Sports Radio Network Black College FCS Poll. The Boxtorow polls are administered by the national radio show “From the Press Box to Press Row.”
