Through three games, the Arkansas-Pine Bluff rushing game has proven to be in good hands — of freshmen.
Jamie Smith enjoyed his breakout performance a week ago against McNeese State. On Saturday, it was Jeremiah Young’s turn.
Young, the former Dollarway all-state performer, led UAPB with 70 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns against Alabama State. He even threw in a touchdown pass, connecting with Ben Anderson from 18 yards out to give the Golden Lions their biggest lead of the game at 39-30.
“Every day, (running backs) coach (Keith) Saine works us hard every single day,” Young said. “He said, our time is coming, and when we got to go, we got to go. We have to give it our all for the team, so I have to step up.”
Young took a majority of the carries for UAPB after Smith went down on a catch out of the backfield midway through the third quarter. UAPB coach Monte Coleman revealed that Smith, who did not return after 38 yards on 13 carries, dealt with a stinger in his shoulder during the week and will undergo X-rays on Monday.
Young, who played quarterback during his senior year at Dollarway, said he worked on the halfback pass with Anderson each day during practice. It came on a third-and-5 from the Alabama State 18 with 9:42 left in the game.
“When (offensive coordinator Eric Dooley) called the play, I was surprised, and I had to do what I had to do,” Young said.
UAPB debuted its new home uniforms Saturday.
The outfits are one of three new sets of uniforms for UAPB. The Lions wore all black for home, will wear white jerseys and pants for road games and and also have gold jerseys and pants to wear should they return to the SWAC championship game in December.
The uniforms have stripes going over the shoulders, a solid stripe down each side of the jersey and two-color stripes down the side of each pair of pants.
