Cierra Ceazer came up with a layup just before the buzzer to give Grambling State a 62-60 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in women’s basketball action.
It is the third straight loss for UAPB.
The game had gone back-and-forth in the final minute. UAPB (9-17, 5-11 SWAC) came from six points down with 1:56 left to tie the game at 58 with 33 seconds left when Asia Rhines-Malone hit one of two free throws. Ceazer then made two free throws, and Rhines-Malone tied it again at 60 with 12 seconds to go.
Ceazer’s buzzer-beater ended what would have been a big come-from-behind victory for UAPB, as the Lady Lions trailed by as many as 18 points with 1:45 remaining. Rhines-Malone tipped in a shot with 5 seconds before halftime to pull the Lady Lions within 39-30.
UAPB took its first lead of the game at 41-40 with 11:41 left in the game on a Chi Chi Okwumabua jumper and last led 50-49 with 5:20 to go. The game was tied five times.
Okwumabua scored a game-high 19 points, Rhines-Malone finished with 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists and four steals, and Lakendra Marsh scored 11 points for UAPB. The Lady Lions shot 24 of 64 for 37.5 percent including 3 of 15 from three-point range, and shot 9 of 20 in free throws.
Ceazer scorred 15 points and had eight rebounds, Dayla Threatt added 11 points and Joanna Miller scored 10 for Grambling State (6-21, 4-11). The Lady Tigers shot 51.9 percent from the field in the first half, but finished 37.7 percent (20 of 53) for the game after hitting 6 of 26 in the second half. They hit 6 of 18 threes and made 16 of 19 from the foul line.
