Late run lifts UAPB past Grambling State


GRAMBLING — The Arkansas Pine Bluff Golden Lions won their fourth straight game Saturday with a 79-67 win over Grambling State inside the Fred Hobdy Assembly Center.

Four Lions scored in the double digits including Tevin Hammond who led UAPB with 20 points. DaVon Haynes and Daniel Broughton had 13 points apiece, while Terrell Kennedy added 12 for the Golden Lions (8-12, 7-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference).

With the scored tied 55-55, UAPB took control of the game with an 11-0 run.

Mitchell Anderson began the run with a tip shot with 5:43 to give UAPB a two-point lead. Hammond made a layup and a free throw with 5:11 left to go up 60-55.

With 4:30 left in the game, Terrell Kennedy made a tip shot and Hammond later followed with two free throws for a 64-55 lead with a little more than four minutes left in the game.

Before the last media timeout, Hammond made a three-point jumper to give the Lions a 69-57 lead with 3:52 left.

Hammond was 4 of 12 from the field and 11 of 11 from the free throw line. He also had four assists, six rebounds and two steals. Kennedy was 5 of 12 from the floor and 1 of 4 from the three-point line. He had three rebound and four assists.

Grambling State took an early 7-2 lead in the first half thanks to four points from Will Hornsby and a three-pointer from Bryant Purvis.

With 13:04 left in the first half, UAPB tied the game at 11 when Lazabian Jackson nailed a three-pointer jumper.

UAPB took their first lead of the game at 14-13 when Marcel Mosley made a three-pointer with 11:36 left in the first half.

By the end of the first half, UAPB led 37-32.

UAPB outscored Grambling State 40-14 in the paint and scored 21 points off turnovers.

Grambling State (0-17, 0-8) fell behind 55-49 after Lazabian Jackson’s three-pointer with 7:45 left but tied it 55-55 on Brandon Dorsett’s free throws at 6:11.

UAPB was 26 of 70 from the floor (37 percent), 5 of 28 from the three point arch (17.9) and 22 of 30 from the free throw line (73 percent.)

Grambling State was 24 of 54 (44 percent) from the floor and 5 of 19 (26 percent) from the three pointer. The Tigers made 14 of 16 from the free throw line. UAPB will play at Jackson State University on Monday beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Lady Lions 62

GRAMBLING, La. — Grambling State notched its’ fourth victory of the season with a 67-62 win over the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Lady Lions Saturday night.

Lakendra Marsh led the Lady Lions with 17 points, on 5 of 8 shooting. All of five of Marsh’s baskets were three-pointers. She was also 2 of 2 from the free throw line.

The Lady Lions would have have three other players in double figures as Cassidy Wright contributed with 12 points, while Chi Chi Okwumbua put up 11 points.

Jenise Gentry chipped in with 10 points.

For the Lady Tigers, Joanna Miller led all scorers with 20 points and Cierra Ceazer chipped in with 15 points. Jessica Watkins scored 10.

Victoya Ricks grabbed 16 rebounds, including nine on the defensive end.

With just three minutes into the game, the Lady Tigers jumped out to a six point lead. Grambling State would stretch the lead to as much as 10 with 9:55 left in the first half, before UAPB would go on a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the contest.

UAPB will face Jackson State University on Monday with the tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
