After one Lady Lions team blew out the other, the other returned the favor.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff bounced back from a five-inning 9-0 loss to Langston (Okla.) to close a home doubleheader with a six-inning 9-1 victory Tuesday. The home win is the host Lady Lions’ first of the season in four tries.
Lacie Sutterfield’s single with two outs scored Tiressa Jacobs to give UAPB (5-18) the eight-run margin to end it early via mercy rule.
That was the second RBI of the game for Sutterfield, who went 4 for 4. Kelsey Ridgeway was 3 for 4 with a two-run home run in the fifth inning, and Jacobs hit 2 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored for UAPB.
The visiting Lady Lions (16-13) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the host Lady Lions came back with five runs in the third, three in the fifth and one in the sixth. UAPB outhit Langston 14-4. Sutterfield struck out three in a complete-game win.
In the first game, Ashley Fabian held UAPB to one hit and struck out only one in a five-inning victory. Heather Leigh had the only hit for the host Lady Lions.
Langston scored one in the first, six in the third, and one each in the fourth and fifth. Leigh gave up nine runs (two earned) on nine hits in all five innings for the loss.
