LONGVIEW, Texas — After a rough nonconference slate, Arkansas-Pine Bluff has started SWAC softball play strong with a 3-1 record in the SWAC Round-Up.
UAPB finished its Round-Up stay Sunday with a 4-3 victory over Mississippi Valley State and 3-2 win over Alabama State, establishing its first winning streak of the season.
Against Valley, UAPB (4-17, 3-1 SWAC) scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. Jasmine Hardwrick led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. With one out, Heather Leigh singled in Hardwrick for the tie.
Leigh advanced on a groundout to the pitcher and scored on a Kelsey Ridgeway single to give the Lady Lions the lead.
Lacie Sutterfield then retired the Devilettes in order to wrap up a complete-game victory. She allowed three unearned runs on six hits and struck out one.
Leigh went 2 for 3 to lead the Lady Lions on offense. UAPB had seven hits to Valley’s six, but committed three errors to Valley’s zero.
UAPB managed to beat Alabama State despite being outhit 8-4. Sutterfield (3-7) again went the distance, allowing two earned runs and striking out two.
Tiressa Jacobs batted in the Lady Lions’ first run with a double down the left field line in the first inning. It was 3-0 in their favor the next inning, as Hardwrick hit a single to left center to score Alexsis McCain and Leigh hit a sacrifice grounder to score Jordan Foyer.
Alabama State scored runs in the third and sixth innings.
No one had multiple hits for the Lady Lions, who return to action at 1 p.m. today with a home doubleheader against Langston (Okla.) at Torii Hunter Softball Complex.
