Lady Lions pull out brooms against Privateers

NEW ORLEANS – Arkansas-Pine Bluff won its second straight game and first on the road this season as it defeated New Orleans 63-54 Friday night at Lakefront Arena.

It was also the second victory by UAPB (4-7) over UNO (1-12) in a week. The Lady Lions defeated the Privateers 75-62 at home last Friday.

Cassidy Wright led the Lady Lions with 16 points and Lakendra Marsh chipped in with 11 points.

UAPB was held to a 31 percent clip from the field as it got off to a sluggish start, making just 1 of 9 from the field to open the game. The slump enabled UNO to grab a 10-5 edge on a Mathilde Fogelstrom layup at the 16:52 mark.

New Orleans made just nine of their 28 shots from the floor in the first half. They made just two three-pointers all night and were 12 of 24 from the free throw line.

UAPB was 3 of 10 from beyond the arch and they made 14 of 22 from the charity stripe.

With the exception of a 20-19 deficit, UAPB led for the remainder of the contest, which included a 9-1 spurt to lead 33-24 at halftime.

The Lady Lions led by as many as 13 points with 5:18 left in the game.

For UNO, Yasmin Taylor was responsible for 16 of the team’s rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. Amber Clay added 10 rebounds, while scoring 12 points for her first career double-double.

The Lady Lions will host SWAC foe Mississippi Valley State at 5 p.m. Jan. 2 at H.O. Clemmons Arena.
