GRAMBLING, La. — Arkansas-Pine Bluff completed a sweep of Grambling State in a weekend softball series.
Better yet, it took a share of first place in the SWAC Western Division.
Behind Heather Leigh’s and Tiressa Jacobs’ 3-for-4 batting performances, UAPB defeated Grambling State 9-1 in six innings Sunday, taking advantage of its 13 hits on the day and Grambling State’s five errors. With the series, the Lady Lions (10-20, 8-1 SWAC) — much like their UAPB baseball counterparts — have broken into the 10-win plateau after an 8-36 campaign in 2012.
Jacobs batted in a run and scored three of her own. In the circle, Leigh did not give up a hit in the final three innings, following a two-hit gem by Lacie Sutterfield (10-8).
The Lady Lions scored two runs in the first inning, one on a walk and another on a wild pitch. They then erupted for five runs in the second, scoring on a Delya Jackson double, back-to-back errors at shortstop and a two-RBI single by Sutterfield.
Grambling State (6-29, 0-10) manufactured its only run in the third, but UAPB added a run in the fourth (on a wild pitch) and sixth (Kelsey Ridgeway single after a Jacobs triple).
Ridgeway and Sutterfield each had two hits and two RBIs.
UAPB shares first place with Texas Southern (23-11, 8-1), which the Lady Lions will host in a three-game series Friday and Saturday. First pitch for Friday’s game is at 3 p.m., with a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
