BATON ROUGE, La. — Arkansas-Pine Bluff, which won eight baseball games last year, reached the 10-win mark in style Sunday, taking the series clincher from Southern 8-1 at Lee-Hines Field.
It was a slugfest for both teams, as UAPB had an 11-10 edge in hits. But Southern (12-12, 8-7 SWAC), which barely leads the SWAC Western Division, struggled to manufacture runs and committed three errors to UAPB’s two.
Kyle Schwartz (2-3) held the Jaguars to one earned run on eight hits and struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings. Stanten Jones allowed only one hit in two full innings and Redmond Floyd gave up a hit in the final two-thirds.
At the plate, Tyler Oertle went 3 for 4 with an RBI, Mike Wieland was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Warren Stehn batted 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Golden Lions (10-19, 5-6 SWAC).
UAPB opened the scoring in the third when Stehn scored on an error by the Southern catcher. The Lions added four runs in the fourth: a Wieland run on an error by the shortstop, Isias Alcantar on a Cody DeMera sacrifice bunt, Kirby Campbell on a Stehn single and Stehn on a fielding error at shortstop.
Southern scored its only run in the fifth.
Patrick Phillips led off the Lions’ seventh with a triple and scored on an Oertle single. Wieland hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Dylan Calhoun later in the inning.
Wieland’s second RBI, to score Calhoun, came on a ninth-inning single.
UAPB is in fifth and last place in the Western Division, trailing Prairie View and Texas Southern for third by a half-game, but the Golden Lions have a better SWAC record than two teams in the East. Southern holds a half-game lead on Grambling State for first in the West.
