The Arkansas-Pine Bluff baseball team picked up some momentum this weekend as it swept conference foe Prairie View A&M in a regular season-ending doubleheader at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex in Pine Bluff.
In the second game, the Golden Lions (21-30, 13-11 SWAC) scored three runs in the fourth inning en route to a 7-4 win over Prairie View (23-25, 12-12 SWAC). In the first game, UAPB survived a late-inning rally and held on for a 5-4 win.
In Game 2, UAPB’s Jim Ploeger earned the victory, pitching five innings and allowing just one run (earned) on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Prairie View’s Johnathon Mata was tagged with the loss after pitching four innings. He allowed four runs (all earned) on eight hits with two walks.
Stephen Lunsford also went four innings and he allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts.
UAPB left nine runners on base in the second game while Prairie View left 11. UAPB also scored a run in the third, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Prairie View scored a run in the third, the sixth, the seventh and the ninth innings.
For the Golden Lions, Dwayne Hysmith was 2 for 3 with three runs and one RBI. Mike Wieland was 2 for 4 with a run and one RBI. Jacob Whitney was 2 for 3 with two runs.
Kirby Campbell was just 1 for 5 but had two RBIs.
For Prairie View, Jeff Sealy was 1 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs.
In the first game, Kyle Schwartz was credited with the win after pitching 8 2/3 innings. He allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
Redmond Floyd went one-third of an inning and allowed just one hit.
Prairie View’s Michael Medina pitched 5 1/3 and allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
UAPB scored two runs in the third, one in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh. Prairie View scored two in the top of the ninth, one in the fourth and one in the fifth.
The Golden Lions left seven runners on base.
Cody De Mera finished 2 for 3 with a run scored while Patrick Phillips was 2 for 3 with one RBI and a run. Isias Alcantar was 1 for 3 with two RBIs.
For Prairie View, Dominiq Harris was 3 for 4 with a RBI and a run scored.
The SWAC baseball championship is slated to begin Wednesday and will be held in Fort Worth, Texas, at LaGrave Field.
