GRAMBLING, La. — Isias Alcantar got Arkansas-Pine Bluff going in the second game of a doubleheader with a home run, and the Golden Lions held on to defeat Grambling State 7-6 Saturday in a SWAC doubleheader.
Grambling State won the opener 6-5.
UAPB had 13 hits to Grambling’s nine in the second game. Wilton Guzman, who went 1 for 1, and Dwayne Hysmith, 2 for 4, each drove in two runs. Kirby Campbell, Alcantar and Rafael Soto each had two hits for the Lions (5-10, 2-3 SWAC).
Mickey Ramirez scattered eight hits and four earned runs over 7 1/3 innings to pick up the win. He struck out five.
Grambling State (4-10, 2-3) was led at the plate by Brandon Kiser, who went 3 for 4 with four RBIs, and Korey Hall and Edwin Drexler with two hits each. Juan Bueno homered for the Tigers.
Richard Bautista gave up five earned runs on 10 hits and struck out four in six full innings for the loss.
In the opener, Grambling State scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 6-5 lead and hung on for the win. Two of the runs scored on an error.
That came after UAPB scored three runs to take the lead.
Cody DeMera hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning for UAPB. Dylan Calhoun went 3 for 4 and Campbell was 2 for 4 for the Lions.
Jim Ploeger gave up four earned runs on eight hits in six innings in the loss, but struck out eight.
Jose Longoria went 3 for 4 and Darren Farmer was 2 for 2 for Grambling. Matt Mitchell (five runs on nine hits in seven innings, three strikeouts) picked up the win.
