PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — After a clinching a spot in the SWAC tournament with a win on Saturday, Arkansas-Pine Bluff had an opportunity to finish at the top of the conference.
But the Golden Lions (19-30, 11-11 SWAC) came up short as they were swept in a doubleheader on Sunday, falling 3-2 in Game 1 and 8-5 in Game 2.
The back-to-back losses drops UAPB to fourth place in the Western Division.
In the second game, UAPB had a 5-3 lead heading into the top of the fifth. But Prairie View scored two runs in the fifth to tie the game and then a run in the seventh and two in the eighth to win.
Sam Grant (1-1) earned the win for Prairie View after pitching two innings and allowing just two hits with two walks and one strikeout. A.J. Helms closed out the game, pitching three shutout innings. He also struck out three.
For UAPB, Humberto Zavala was credited with the loss after pitching 1 1/3 and allowing one run (earned) on no hits with two walks and a strikeout.
UAPB scored two runs in the second and third innings and one run in the fourth.
Isias Alcantar led the Golden Lions at the plate, finishing 3 for 4 with a run scored and one RBI.
In the first game, Prairie View scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to ensure the victory as the defeated UAPB 3-2.
UAPB junior Kyle Schwartz pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Prairie View’s Michael Medina pitched seven innings and allowed one run (earned) on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Stephen Lunsford pitched two innings and gave up one run (earned) on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Warren Stehn led UAPB, finishing 2 for 4 with a run scored. Dylan Calhoun was 2 for 4 with a RBI.
For Prairie View, Trey Price was 2 for 3 with a run scored.
UAPB will face Prairie View A&M again on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at noon at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.
