Golden Lions salvage split


PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Pinch-hitter Jacob Whitney hit a two-run single with two outs in the top of the 11th inning, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff held on to take a 5-3 victory over Prairie View A&M to split a Saturday doubleheader.

Prairie View shut out UAPB 6-0 in the first game.

Whitney drove in the two runs in his only at-bat, and UAPB (19-28, 11-9 SWAC) avoided evening its conference record to remain in second place in the SWAC Western Division behind Southern (20-21, 14-10 SWAC) with one conference game remaining. The final game of the weekend series will be played at 1 p.m. today.

Prairie View fell to 21-22 and 10-10, tied with Texas Southern for third.

Isias Alcantar accounted for three of UAPB’s eight hits, driving in a run. UAPB led 3-0 through seven innings, but Prairie View scored two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to send the game to extra innings.

Stanten Jones (5-5) held the Panthers without a hit in 1 2/3 innings to take the win for the Golden Lions. Starter Mikey Ramirez allowed three earned runs on eight hits in 8 1/3 innings, but struck out nine. Redmond Floyd pitched a full inning of hitless ball to relieve Ramirez.

In the first game, the Lions could only muster two hits off Johnathon Mata (4-3), who pitched a complete game. He struck out two and walked one.

Jim Ploeger (4-4) gave up four earned runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings, striking out four, but took the loss. Andrew Buehler allowed four hits, but held the Panthers to one run the rest of the way.

Dylan Calhoun had the two hits off Mata.
