Golden Lions blow big lead, fall

FORT WORTH, Texas — In the opening game of the SWAC baseball tournament at LaGrave Field, Arkansas-Pine Bluff fell to the third seed Alcorn State 11-8 Wednesday.

The Braves (16-39) would shut out the Golden Lions (21-31) through the last four innings, but added to their run total by adding three in the seventh and four more in the eighth that gave Alcorn State the lead.

UAPB’s Andrew Buehler (0-2) took the loss after giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits in just 1 1/3 innings. He also struck out a batter. Starter Mikey Ramirez went six innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits with two walks and five strikeouts. UAPB used four pitchers in the game.

The loss drops UAPB to the loser’s bracket of the tournament. The Golden Lions are scheduled to play again today at 9 a.m.

UAPB had a 6-0 lead through three innings but allowed a run in the fourth and three in fourth. After the Golden Lions scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, they led 8-4.

Alcorn State’s Rya Fuentes (1-2) is credited with the win. He pitched three innings, allowing no runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Starter Mike Peters pitched six innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits. He allowed eight walks with seven strikeouts.

UAPB left 14 runners on base.

Dwayne Hysmith was 3 for 3 with two runs and three RBI for UAPB. Isias Alcantar, the SWAC Player of the Year, was just 1 for 4 with a RBI and a walk.

Also for the Lions, Dylan Calhoun was 2 for 4 with two runs and Tyler Oertle was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

For Alcorn State, Angel Polo was 3 for 5 with two runs and five RBIs, and Christian Hickman was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
