Golden Lions’ comeback just short

MEMPHIS — Arkansas-Pine Bluff fell into a 6-0 hole and could not quite climb all the way out as Memphis took the first of a two-night baseball series with a 7-5 win Tuesday at FedEx Park.

The two teams will meet again at 6:30 tonight.

UAPB (10-20) had runners on first and third before Dwayne Hysmith batted into an unassisted play by the shortstop for the game’s final out. Isias Alcantar, who went 2 for 5 on the night, led off the ninth inning with a single, but the next two batters struck out. Warren Stehn reached on a muffed throw by the first baseman, but was forced out at second on Hysmith’s at-bat to end the threat.

Memphis (19-13) took charge with two runs in the second and four in the fourth. The Tigers only got one hit off Didier Landry (0-2) in the first 3 1/3 innings, but he left after allowing three earned runs and walking three.

Jaron Gold scattered six hits and struck out three in the next four innings, allowing one earned run, with Stanten Jones, Andrew Buehler and Redmond Floyd combining for the final two-thirds of work.

Hysmith singled to left field to drive in two runs in the sixth, putting UAPB on the board. The Golden Lions struck again in the seventh when Alcantar smashed a two-run home run to left and added a run in the eighth on a Tyler Oertle double.

Cody DeMera, Alcantar and Rafael Soto each had two hits for the Lions. Jake Little was 4 for 4 and Drew Griffin 2 for 3 for the Tigers.
