Former Lions SID to receive SWAC honor

Former Arkansas-Pine Bluff sports information director Carl Whimper will receive the Charles “Chuck” Prophet Memorial Wagon Master Award during the SWAC Alumni Association’s Legends Reception and Awards Dinner on Dec. 7 in Birmingham, Ala.

The award is presented annually to an individual from a SWAC institution for dedicated and meritorious service to his school and/or the conference for an extended period.

Whimper, now the radio color analyst for UAPB football and basketball games, covered UAPB athletics throughout his college years while serving as sports editor for the school’s newspaper, the Arkansawyer. He began working part-time in the public relations office as a senior at UAPB and created the school’s first sports information office in 1974. Shortly after graduation in 1975, he was named assistant director of public relations with primary responsibility for sports information.

In 2007, Whimper’s duties shifted from director of media relations for athletics to assistant director of student recruitment.

The dinner will be held at the Doubletree Hotel a day before UAPB competes in the SWAC football championship game in Birmingham. Receiving Lifetime Achievement Awards there will be former Alabama A&M athletic director Betty Austin, former Mississippi Valley State football coach Davis Weathersby, former A&M quarterback and SWAC administrator Jay Roberson and late Prairie View A&M president Edward B. Evans. Former Alcorn State women’s basketball coach Shirley Walker is the guest of honor for the roast.

The evening’s activities will begin at 6 p.m. with the awards presentation, dinner and roast following at 7. Tickets are $60 each and can be purchased by contacting Roscoe Nance at 703-481-0084 or scomobile@aol.com, or Alvin Moore at 205-222-1044 or amprint1949@aol.com.
