Sugar Bowl to host Champions Bowl

NEW ORLEANS — The Sugar Bowl has been awarded hosting rights to the Champions Bowl, which will pit a Southeastern Conference team against another from the Big 12 champion, starting with the 2014 season.

The agreement is for 12 years. The first Champions Bowl will be played in the Superdome in New Orleans on Jan. 1, 2015.

The champions of the SEC and Big 12 will be in the game unless one or both are selected to compete in the four-team national championship playoff, which also will begin that season.
