Bulldogs clinch series with strong eighth inning

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Samford scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to build a six-run cushion and defeated the Arkansas-Pine Bluff baseball team 8-2 Saturday afternoon.

UAPB’s Kyle Schwartz took the loss after pitching 6 1/3 innings and allowing three runs (three earned) on six hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.

UAPB (14-24) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Kirby Campbell walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt to start the inning. A double down the left field line by Dwayne Hysmith plated Campbell from second.

After a single by Patrick Phillips to put runners at the corners with one out, Dylan Calhoun hit a single through the right side to score Hysmith.

Samford (21-19) also scored a run in the fourth and two in the sixth.

Hysmith finished 2 for 3 with a run and one RBI. Calhoun was 1 for 3 with a RBI. UAPB had just five hits in the contest.

Also for the Lions, Redmond Floyd gave up three runs (all earned) on three hits, and Humberto Zavala pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed two runs (none earned) on two hits with a walk and as strikeout.

C.K. Irby (6-3) took the win for Samford after pitching seven innings. He allowed two runs (both earned) on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Sophomore Andres Gracia pitched two innings and allowed just one hit with three strikeouts.

UAPB will try to avoid the sweep today when it faces Samford at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
