ARKADELPHIA — Ouachita Baptist outscored the Arkansas-Monticello men’s basketball team 47-21 in the second half to defeat the Boll Weevils 62-58 on Saturday in the final game of the regular season for both teams.
The Boll Weevils (16-10, 11-9 GAC) led 31-21 at halftime and grew that lead to 12 points on the opening possession of the second half, but OBU (14-12, 10-9) responded with a 21-3 scoring run over the next eight minutes to take a six-point lead with 12 minutes remaining in regulation.
UAM made its final surge, using a 9-2 scoring run capped by a pair of free throws from junior Brandon Sims take a one-point lead at the 4:51 mark.
Sims led UAM with 15 points off the bench. Senior Kori Forge and junior Josh Gibson also reached double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Michael Morris led OBU with 13 points.
The Boll Weevils enter the Great American Conference Championship Tournament as the No. 3 seed for the second straight season, and will open the event against sixth-seeded Southwestern Oklahoma State on Friday at noon at the Bruin Fieldhouse in Bartlesville, Okla.
Ouachita 75, UAM 63
ARKADELPHIA — Ouachita Baptist shot nearly 60 percent from the field in the second half to defeat UAM Saturday.
UAM sophomore Catherine Puckett scored a career-high 19 points, while adding her second double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. Junior Ashley Qualls also reached double-figures for UAM with 13 points.
The Cotton Blossoms will enter next week’s GAC tournament in Bartlesville as the No. 8 seed and will face regular-season champion Arkansas Tech at 6 p.m. Thursday.
