MONTICELLO — Three pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter in the Arkansas-Monticello baseball team’s season opener Sunday.
The Boll Weevils swept LeMoyne-Owen 8-0 and 9-0. Chris Guzman started the first game and pitched five innings. He set down his first nine batters before walking the leadoff hitter in the fourth inning. It was the only base runner the Weevils allowed in that game.
Guzman struck out five batters. Brent Noble struck out two batters in his one inning of work and Eddie Smith struck out the side in his only inning of work.
UAM (2-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and added three more third inning before adding a run in the fourth and fifth innings.
Wayne Hawkins went 2-for-4 at the plate with a solo home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Taylor Eaves, Danny Loya, Chase Stokes, J.D. Deloach, Tyler Walker and Christian Gallegos all had one RBI for the Weevils.
In the second game, LeMoyne-Owen (0-2) was held without a hit through the first 3 2/3 innings before getting three hits in the next 1 1/3 against Russell Watts. But the Weevils still held the Magicians scoreless and gave up no walks. Watts did hit one batter as did Weevils’ reliever Josh Chism.
Kenny Marshall started the game for UAM and got the win as he pitched three no-hit innings and struck out six batters. Watts pitched two innings and struck out three batters while Chism pitched the final two innings and struck out two batters.
The Weevils scored two runs in the second inning, three in the fourth and four more in the sixth.
Eaves was 2-for-3 with a solo home run and run-scoring triple. He also scored two runs. Gallegos was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored. Loya, Hawkins, Chism, T.J. Cox and Paul Parsels all had one RBI in the win.
