MAGNOLIA — Arkansas-Monticello went into its final regular-season baseball series thinking it might need another win to qualify for the Great American Conference tournament.
UAM didn’t get that win Saturday, dropping 12-3 and 4-3 decisions at 13th-ranked Southern Arkansas, but the Boll Weevils have already made its first conference tournament since 2006, it turns out.
In the first game, UAM (28-18) scored a run in the top of the third on an RBI single from junior D’Marco Poindexter, who also had a run-producing single in the fifth inning to force a 2-all tie.
SAU (36-13) scored a pair in the bottom of the fifth, before scoring three in the seventh and five in the eight to earn the lop-sided win. UAM added its final score on an RBI sac fly from junior Ben Agredano in the top of the eighth.
Poindexter went 3-for-4 in the game with two runs batted in and one run scored. Senior Hunter Allday finished 2-for-4 at the plate.
In the second game, UAM broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single from junior Alex Lang. The Boll Weevils took a 3-0 lead in the sixth on a two-run home run by senior T.J. Cox.
SAU chipped away in the final two innings with two runs in each frame. UAM sophomore starter Logan Johnson (2-1) suffered the loss. The series finale is at 2 p.m. today.
