MAGNOLIA — The Arkansas-Monticello baseball team concluded the 2013 regular season with an 11-3 win over Southern Arkansas on Sunday at Walker Stadium at Goodheart Field.
It is UAM’s first conference win over SAU since the 2006 season.
UAM (29-18, 17-13 GAC) pounded 20 hits in the win, in which six of the nine Boll Weevil batters had at least two hits. Junior Chad Miller went 4 for 4 with three RBIs, junior Ben Agredano went 4 for 6 with three RBIs, senior Danny Loya went 3 for 5 and senior Taylor Eaves went 3 for 6.
UAM’s Chris Guzman (4-1) pitched a complete game, allowed just three runs off nine hits with a career high 10 strikeouts and just one walk.
SAU (36-14, 23-7 GAC) scored its final run in the sixth on an RBI double by Jackson McCurdy.
The Boll Weevils secured the No. 5 seed in next weekend’s Great American Conference Championship Tournament at the David Allen Memorial Ballpark in Enid, Okla. UAM will open up against the No. 2 seed, Southwestern Oklahoma State, on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
This is UAM’s first conference championship tournament appearance since the 2005 season.
