MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team suffered a 5-2 loss to No. 13 Southern Arkansas on Wednesday in its final home game of the 2013 season.
Both teams were kept scoreless until the third inning. SAU (31-12) opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the inning, two of which were unearned due a UAM fielding error. UAM (28-16) answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a sac fly from junior D’Marco Poindexter and an RBI double from senior Hunter Allday.
The Muleriders finalized the scoring with two runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Brady Capshaw and a two-out RBI double from Tyler Cameron.
Allday led UAM offensively with a 3 for 3 performance, including two doubles. He also reached base on a hit by pitch in the eighth one out to allow UAM to bring to the plate the potential tying run. SAU starter Timothy Buchanan pitched out of that jam with an infield popup and a foul out to right field.
Poindexter and junior Chad Miller each added two hits. Freshman Zach McKnight (4-2) took the loss after allowing just one earned run off four hits with one strikeout and two walks in the first 2 2/3 innings. Junior Kade Garlington and senior Brent Noble combined to allow two runs off five hits in the final 6 1/3 innings. SAU’s Buchanan (7-1) earned the complete-game victory after allowing two runs off nine hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Buchanan threw 143 pitches.
The Boll Weevils are off this weekend and return to action on April 23 on the road against Lyon College. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. in Batesville. UAM defeated Lyon 13-0 earlier this season at home.
