Forge’s last-second jumper gives Weevils win

BETHANY, Okla. — Senior Kori Forge hit a jump shot with one second remaining in regulation to give the Arkansas-Monticello men’s basketball team a 53-52 victory over Southern Nazarene on Saturday in Great American Conference action.

Down eight points with two and a half minutes remaining in regulation, the Boll Weevils (14-8, 9-7 GAC) closed out the game on a 9-0 scoring surge to steal a road victory and complete the season sweep over the Crimson Storm (13-10, 8-9 GAC). UAM defeated SNU 72-56 on Jan. 10 in Monticello.

Forge (16 points) was responsible for seven of the final nine points scored during UAM’s surge in the last 2 minutes of the contest. Forge hit a jumper to start the run, and nailed a three-pointer with 31 seconds remaining to cut SNU’s lead to 52-51 before hitting the go-ahead shot. Senior A.J. Calhoun forced a turnover on SNU’s game-winning attempt to seal the win.

Junior Josh Gibson added a layup off a turnover at the 2:05 mark to trim SNU’s lead to four points.

Junior Dayton Mickens added 12 points for UAM and led the team in rebounds with eight.


Southern Nazarene 77, UAM 55

BETHANY, Okla. — UAM (5-17, 2-14 GAC) struggled offensively throughout the game, shooting at a 28 percent clip in the first half to trail by 20 points at halftime.

After being limited to just one point and trailing by five points in the first four minutes, the Cotton Blossoms used an 8-0 scoring run to take a three-point lead at the 12:46 mark on a jumper from sophomore Catherine Puckett. UAM maintained its lead and led by as much as four points on a three-point play from junior Demetra Howlingwolf at the 11:24 mark, before SNU regained the lead for good and outscored UAM 29-5 in the final 10 minutes of the opening period.

Puckett led UAM with 15 points and six rebounds, while Howlingwolf added 10 points off the bench.
