First-place Savage Storm snap Weevils’ streak

DURANT, Okla. — Southeastern Oklahoma State outscored Arkansas-Monticello 43-29 in the second half on its way to a 67-61 men’s basketball victory Saturday.

The Savage Storm (9-3, 5-1 Great American Conference) remained in first place in the conference with the win and snapped UAM’s three-game winning streak.

UAM (7-5, 2-4) scored the final 10 points of the first half to take a 32-24 lead. The Boll Weevils could come within no closer than two points following technical shots by Kori Forge with 1:17 remaining in the game.

Ramon Mejia led UAM with 16 points. A.J. Calhoun added 13 points and 12 rebounds, Dayton Mickens scored 12 points and Forge netted 10.

Blossoms drop high-scoring affair at Southeastern

DURANT, Okla. — Arkansas-Monticello scored its second-largest point total of the season, but it wasn’t enough to defeat Southeastern Oklahoma State 90-84 in women’s basketball Saturday.

UAM (2-9, 0-6 GAC) held a 23-16 lead in the first half before Southeastern (5-7, 3-3) responded with a 12-4 run. The teams then went back-and-forth over the next 6 minutes and Southeastern took a 50-46 lead into the locker room.

The Cotton Blossoms shot a season-high 49 percent from the field in the loss, led by Jordan Goforth’s 17 points, Donlicia James’ 16 and Ashley Qualls’ 10.

Texans advance to meet Patriots in AFC

HOUSTON — Matt Schaub completed 29 of 38 passes for 262 yards, Arian Foster had 32 carries for 140 yards and a touchdown, and the Houston Texans eliminated the Cincinnati Bengals from the AFC playoffs for the second year in a row with a 19-13 win Saturday.

Shayne Graham kicked four field goals for Houston, which will play at New England next Sunday.

Andy Dalton was held to 127 yards on 14-of-30 passing for Cincinnati. He threw an interception.

Packers exact revenge against Vikings

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Almost a week after losing on a last-second field goal in Minnesota, Green Bay returned the favor.

Aaron Rodgers threw for 274 yards and a touchdown, and the Packers rolled to a 24-10 victory over the Vikings in an NFC Wild Card game.

Joe Webb started at quarterback for Minnesota for Christian Ponder, who had an elbow injury, and threw for 180 yards and a touchdown.

Green Bay will play at San Francisco next Saturday night.

North Dakota State defends NCAA championship

FRISCO, Texas — North Dakota State broke open a game that was tied at 10 at halftime and dominated Sam Houston State for a 39-13 win and a second straight NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision title Saturday.

Quarterback Brock Jensen ran for three touchdowns and Sam Ojuri had two to lead North Dakota State (14-1). The Bison totaled 441 total yards including 300 on the ground while holding the Bearkats (11-4) to 116 rushing yards.

Berkman agrees to 1-year contract with Rangers

Slugger Lance Berkman agreed to a one-year contract with a vesting option for 2014 with the Texas Rangers, MLB.com reported Saturday.

Berkman spent the past two seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, winning a World Series against the Rangers in 2011. He was held to 32 games with a right knee injury in 2012 and left off the playoff roster.

The Texas native played for the Houston Astros from 1999-2010.
