Blossoms end lengthy break with defeat


SAN ANTONIO, Texas — After a back-and-forth start, the University of the Incarnate Word went on a 22-8 run and went on to beat Arkansas-Monticello 37-24 on Friday in the first game of the St. Mary’s Classic in women’s basketball.

It was UAM’s first game in 22 days.

UAM led 16-15 before the Cardinals made their big run. Alex Hart led the Cotton Blossoms with 16 points, but her team shot 35 percent from the field. Incarnate Word, led Jacelyn Jarmon’s 16 points, hit 47 percent.

Both teams struggled from 3-point range. UAM was 4 for 19 and Incarnate Word 2 for 10.

UAM will play St. Mary’s at 3 p.m. today. In men’s basketball, UAM, which last played Dec. 10, will host Lyon College at 4 p.m. Monday.
