It appears the Arkansas-Pine Bluff baseball responded after Saturday’s two losses very well.
UAPB totaled 10 hits and held off a Texas Southern comeback Sunday to take a 6-3 victory at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex, preventing a sweep by the Tigers. The game lasted 4 hours, 1 minute.
Soloman Williams, Cody DeMara and James Boulware each had two hits to lead the Golden Lions (2-18-1, 2-4 SWAC).
Vince Newton gave up six earned runs on four hits and six walks in 4 2/3 innings, but it was good enough to earn him the victory. Elliot Jackson pitched 3 1/3 innings and held the Tigers to a run on four hits, and Stanten Jones yielded two runs on one hit in the ninth inning for the save.
Texas Southern (11-9, 2-6) led off with three runs, but UAPB responded with six in the first inning and stayed in front the rest of the way. The Golden Lions chased Denzel Pipkin after he allowed five earned runs on three hits in two-thirds innings, and Robert Pearson failed to record an out after facing three batters in the inning. Michael Starkey finally finished the inning, going on to work 3 2/3 innings and giving up three runs on four hits.
Three more Tiger pitchers were used.
UAPB scored a run each in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh innings and outhit Texas Southern 10-9. UAPB had three errors, two more than Texas Southern.
Cameron Logan went 3 for 3 in a designated hitter role to lead the Tigers. Pine Bluff native Sebastian Stargell and Aaron Warren each had two hits.
DeMara and Boulware each batted in three runs. DeMara doubled twice.
The Lions will host Northeastern (Okla.) State at 3 p.m. today.
