CLEVELAND, Miss. — Arkansas-Monticello needed nine innings to defeat former Gulf South Conference rival Delta State 2-1, but dropped the second game of a doubleheader 9-4 Thursday.
UAM outhit Delta State 5-1 going into the ninth inning of the first game. That’s when Maggie Sands smashed a single to the shortstop to score Kara House and Sara Matthews. Delta State answered with only one run that inning. Kayla Jackson held the Lady Statesmen to that one hit for a complete-game victory.
In Game 2, the Lady Statesmen scored eight runs in the first inning. They hit a home run to start the game and a grand slam before the inning ended.
Jackson homered in the seventh to pull UAM within 9-4.
Katie Slaughter suffered the loss.
