winning streak ends
DURANT, Okla. — The Arkansas-Monticello softball team saw its 16-game win streak snapped Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 Southeastern Oklahoma State victory before returning the favor, 4-3, to split a doubleheader.
The Cotton Blossoms (31-11, 19-3 Great American Conference) trailed in Game 1, 1-0, after the first five innings after Southeastern (31-13, 21-5 GAC) got one run in the bottom of the third off a pair of hits. Kayla Jackson gave UAM the lead in the top of the sixth, however, with a two-run home run over the left-field fence that brought in Maggie Sands from second.
The Savage Storm got the two runs right back in the home half of the inning on three hits and a Blossom error to take Game 1. The Blossoms’ 16-game streak dated back to March 18.
The win was the 16th in a row for Southeastern.
Each team got a run in the first inning of a home run-filled Game 2, with Jackson providing the spark for the Blossoms with her second of the day to left, this time a solo shot. Katie Campbell got the Storm on the board with a solo homer of her own in the bottom of the inning.
SOSU took the lead in the third with Campbell’s second long ball of the game, a two-run shot down the left field line to put the Storm up 3-1. The Blossoms got two runs in the sixth to tie the game. Taylor Russell homered to drive in Jackson along the way.
The Blossoms got the winning run in the top of the seventh thanks to a lead-off homer from Beth Johnson. Credit for the win went to Jackson, who pitched four innings of relief after going the full six in the Game 1 loss.
SE Oklahoma State 7-4, UAM 2-2: MONTICELLO — UAM faced an uphill battle of the three-game GAC series with the conference-leading Southeastern Savage Storm, falling 7-2 and 4-2 on Senior Day.
The Savage Storm (29-11, 21-8 GAC) jumped out in the first game to a 2-0 lead before the Boll Weevils (15-25, 4-15 GAC) could muster a response.
