Reynolds signs with Mets

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas third baseman Matt Reynolds is moving on to professional baseball.

Reynolds signed with the New York Mets on Monday, ending his three-year career with the Razorbacks. He was selected by the Mets in the second round of the Major League Baseball Draft earlier this month and wrapped up his Arkansas career in the College World Series last week.

The Tulsa native enjoyed a strong junior season, leading the Razorbacks in most offensive categories. He hit .323 with seven home runs and 45 RBIs. He also had a .950 fielding percentage.

Reynolds will begin his pro career with the single-A Savannah Sand Gnats in the South Atlantic League. One new teammate will be pitcher Michael Fulmer, an Arkansas commitment who signed with the Mets out of high school.

Others are expected to sign with their professional teams in the next few days. The group includes pitchers Nolan Sanburn (Oakland Athletics) and D.J. Baxendale (Minnesota Twins).

Gay finishes second to earn trip to Olympics

EUGENE, Ore. – For the second time in his career, Tyson Gay will represent Team USA at the Summer Olympics after his performance Sunday at Hayward Field. The former Razorback finished in second place in the finals of the 100 meters, crossing the line in a season-best time of 9.86 seconds. The 100-meter competition in London will begin Saturday, Aug. 4.

Gay, the 2008 Olympic Trials champion, will be joined in London by winner Justin Gatlin (9.80) and bronze finisher Ryan Bailey (9.93). He previously experienced the Olympics during the 2008 season in Beijing. Gay is entered to compete in next week’s 200-meter rounds.
